TITLE: Multimodal Information Fusion for Multimedia Information Retrieval

ABSTRACT: Information retrieval is often at the heart of any multimedia information management system. Managing multimedia information by semantic content thus requires the definition of information fusion strategies compatible with a reactive interactive environment. We review here advances made in the design of information fusion strategies specific for information retrieval systems. We first investigate theoretical findings and then, look at their embedding into practical interactive contexts.
In particular, we place emphasis on showing novel learning-based retrieval strategies may be adapted in the context of complex multimodal information. Based on the definition of user-adapted information representation spaces, we demonstrate how indexing tools may be designed to search and browse these spaces interactively. The developped case are essentially related to image and video retrieval.
